A celebration of LGBTQIA+ Manchester
In 2012 we worked with the young people of The Proud Trust and Museum of Science and Industry to create an interactive community exhibition celebrating Manchester through LGBTQIA+ eyes.
As a group we shared personal stories of our time in Manchester, mapping locations of significance in the city, where important events in our lives had taken place. Everybody was given cameras and tasked with taking photos and film footage to tell their stories about what happened where, and why we all love living here as LGBTQIA+ people.
The exhibition was interactive and allowed viewers and visitors at the museum to get involved and talk about their own vision of Manchester. Contributors did not all identify as LGBTQIA+ themselves, but were encouraged to think of how the LGBTQIA+ community fits into their perception of the wonderful City of Manchester.
The exhibition ran for 6 months until the end of LGBT+ History Month, February 2013. Memory Maps Manchester was co-created by Sarah Emmott and Kelly Parish and commissioned by Museum of Science and Industry.
