The Art Show
A 5-week visual arts collaboration with Broughton residents
A 5-week visual arts collaboration with Broughton residents
Art with Heart and local artist Emma Evans led a five-week series of fun, relaxed creative sessions where Broughton Community Centre members explored the theme of “Culture in Your Community” through art.
This workshop was open to everyone, regardless of experience or skill level, and provided a great opportunity for people to express themselves, collaborate, and make new friends. Over five weeks, the group created three collective pieces of art, each focusing on different aspects of culture.
The group shared their memories of Broughton in the past, how they felt about life in Broughton in the present day, and what they would like for the future in Broughton. They explored different visual artforms including collage, painting and typography. Salford-based artist Jamie-Lee Wainman provided workshop facilitation alongside Emma Evans.
The creations were showcased at a special Art Show at Broughton Community Centre, which was attended by local councillors, decision makers and cultural leaders. This provided a rare opportunity for local residents in Broughton to feed into plans for cultural, health and leisure initiatives and activities in their area. Their main message was ‘Include Us’ in decisions.
” I really love today’s exhibition and I think what I’ll take away from it is that big, bright yellow painting, that says ‘include us’. I mean, you can’t leave this exhibition without getting that message really loud and clear. It’s what I love about the exhibition, but also the work that’s gone in behind the scenes, with Art with Heart and the artists to build a really authentic and honest conversation with people about what culture means.
It’s a huge word, and we really wanted to know what culture means to everybody across the city. And this is really getting into that detail of what it means in a community. And there’s so much to take away from the exhibition.”
– Darren Grice, Director of Culture, Salford Culture and Place Partnership
“I like to think there’s always a good vibe here and people get on, but actually even that first week there seemed to be just a real buzz about the room. Some of them knew each other, some of them didn’t, but it was just really lovely. It gave people an opportunity to voice and think about things from the past, to think about their communities together and to share stories and to laugh together, to get a bit frustrated and angry together about certain issues and situations. I think it’s been a real boost for people to meet new people, to express themselves, to talk. ”
